Dr. Hasan Nuhanović
PhD from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia
Biography
Hasan Nuhanović was an interpreter for the United Nations in Srebrenica. His family was murdered
when the town fell to the Bosnian Serb Army in July 1995. Since then, he has relentlessly spoken out
against genocide denial and campaigned for justice for the victims. In 2005, the remains of Hasan’s
father, Ibro, were identified. The remains of his mother, Nasiha, and his brother were identified and
buried in 2010.
In 2003, Hasan brought a civil case against the Netherlands, arguing that the handing over of his
father and brother to the Bosnian Serb forces constituted a breach of fundamental human rights
and amounted to involvement in genocide. In 2013, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands ruled in
Hasan’s favour, concluding that the Netherlands was responsible for their deaths.
Hasan played a key role in establishing the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial at Potočari, Srebrenica.
He is the author of several books, including The Last Refuge and Under the UN Flag.
In 2022, he obtained his PhD from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. In his dissertation, he
addressed the problem of missing persons following ethnic cleansing and genocide committed
against Bosniaks during the 1990s.
